The Home Office has recently re-categorised the main UK immigration routes into a points-based system consisting of 5 Tiers.
TIER 1 - UK Visas for highly skilled migrants
Tier 1 visas allow entrepreneurs, graduate students, highly skilled workers and business investors to work for any employer or be self-employed in any capacity in the UK. There is no need for an employer to sponsor a Tier 1 visa.- Highly Skilled Migrants Visa – for highly educated and skilled persons which replaces the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP)
- Graduate Students – this replaces the International Graduate Scheme. This allows foreign graduates of higher education institutes within the United Kingdom to remain in the country for two years after graduation.
- Entrepeneurs Visa – for individuals looking to set up or take over a business
- Investors Visa – for wealthy individuals who will invest large sums of money
TIER 2 - UK Visas for skilled migrants
Tier 2 visas replace the Work Permit scheme. You need an offer of employment (certificate of sponsorship) from a UK employer before you can apply for this visa.- Skilled worker visas. This replaces the Work Permit entry route to the UK.
TIER 3 - UK Visas for low skilled migrants
Tier 3 visas are for low skilled workers on a temporary basis. Please note that this tier is currently suspended.- Low skilled migrants visas of the Points Based UK visa service caters for people entering the UK to perform temporary low skilled work. The new Tier 3 category replaces the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Scheme (SAWS) and the Sectors Based Scheme (SBS).
TIER 4 - UK Student visas
Tier 4 visas replace the student visa category and allow individuals to study in the UK. If students are successful at a suitable level in theur studies, they have the potential to apply for a Tier 1 visa.- Student Visas – applications relating to all aspects of studying in the UK
TIER 5 - UK Visas for Temporary Workers and Youth Mobility
Tier 5 visas allow for up to 2 years working in the UK for those aged between 18-30 from qualifying countries.- Temporary Workers and Youth Mobility Visas will replace a range of youth mobility schemes such as the Working Holiday Maker Scheme and the Au Pair Programme with a single visa system.
